Theory Test

The theory test and hazard perception

The Theory test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions taken from a question bank of 1000. To pass you must answer at least 43 of the 50 correctly within a time limit of 40 minutes. It is possible to arrange for a special audio version, available in 20 languages. There is a video version available in British sign language. If you are dyslexic or have reading difficulties an audio version is available.

The hazard perception test

After a short break the Hazard Perception Test will last 15 minutes, you will be shown 15 clips and you must spot the moving developing hazard, one clip has 2 hazards.

Before you start you will be shown a tutorial video giving examples on how they want you to complete the test.

You can book the theory test over the telephone on 0870 0101372. Payment can be made by credit card, however the cardholder must be present.

Additionally, they will need your driver number from your provisional driving licence.

Alternatively, Chequered Flag Driver Training can make all the necessary arrangements on your behalf.

Lessons

We will ensure that each lesson is individually tailored towards your needs and requirements and as your lessons progress, we will assess and make the necessary adjustments to ensure that you get the most our of your lesson. Each lesson is very much 'bespoke' and dependent on the pupils confidence and pick up rate.

The Driving Test

You can apply for your driving test anytime after passing your theory test.

We can apply for you if you prefer.

You can do it yourself on line at www.dsa.gov.uk or by telephoning the Driving Standards Agency on 0870 0101372. Please quote your instructors ADI number to prevent double booking.

Are you ready to take your test?

Your driving test will be the first time that you have to drive unaided. The examiner is there to assess your driving, he expects you to be able to deal with any situation that arises. The learners who pass first time are the ones who are well instructed and take the advise of there instructor, our mock tests will help you assess your level.

The test

Documents, you need to present both parts of the Photo card licence (The Photo card and the paper counterpart) if you have the old style licence you need to take additional photo ID (your passport)

Eye site test

You must be able to read a car number plate from 20 meters. You may read the number plate with glasses or contact lenses.

Maintenance questions

You will be asked by the examiner to show or tell how you would perform various car safety checks.

The 'drive'

The drive lasts approximately 45 minutes and is designed to include a variety of situations, busy town driving, roundabouts, and dual carriageway, various junctions and traffic systems. The test includes various set manoeuvres e.g. parking; turn in the road, various types corner reverses and emergency stop. If you can drive the test is not difficult.

The examiners use set criteria to mark your test. They know you will be nervous, you are allowed to make up to 15 small mistakes and still pass. One serious or dangerous fault however will result in a fail.

Pass Plus

consisting of 6 modules:

There is NO test. Upon competion of your Pass Plus course a certificate is sent to the pupil which can then presented to an insurance company operating within the scheme. This will attract a discount of premium and usually one year's NCB.
